The year ahead, measured in premieres.
The year 2017 saw some of the best movies to hit theatres in a long time. With the likes of Wonder Woman, Blade Runner 2049, Call Me By Your Name, Lady Bird, La La Land and the latest sequel, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, it was a year to remember for every movie maniac on the planet.
What lies ahead? Well, it seems cinema will keep humankind entertained and mesmerised forever. There is plenty more to come in terms of jaw-dropping, nerve-wracking and heart-touching entertainment in 2018 as well. Here is a list of the movies we are most looking forward to.
01
Black Panther
FebruaryMarvel Studios
T’Challa returns home to Wakanda to take his father’s throne — and Ryan Coogler turns a superhero instalment into a cultural event. Expect Afrofuturist design, a career-defining villain in Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger, and a film people will talk about long after February.
02
A Quiet Place
AprilJohn Krasinski
A family survives in silence, hunted by creatures that strike at the faintest sound. John Krasinski directs and stars opposite Emily Blunt in the year’s most nerve-shredding premise — a horror film you will be afraid to eat popcorn during.
03
Avengers: Infinity War
April–MayMarvel Studios
Ten years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe collide as Thanos comes for the Infinity Stones and every hero on the board assembles to stop him. The most star-studded cast ever put in one frame — and, if the rumours hold, an ending nobody will see coming.
Ten years of build-up, one battlefield — 2018’s main event.
04
Ready Player One
MarchSteven Spielberg
Spielberg adapts the beloved novel about a virtual treasure hunt inside the OASIS — a film built from three decades of pop culture and stitched together by the director who invented half of it. Pure spectacle, engineered by a master.
05
Deadpool 2
May20th Century Fox
The merc with a mouth returns, this time with Josh Brolin’s time-travelling Cable in tow. Expect fourth walls demolished, franchises mocked — its own included — and the year’s highest jokes-per-minute ratio.
06
Incredibles 2
JunePixar
Fourteen years after the original, Brad Bird finally reopens the Parr family file. This time Elastigirl takes the spotlight while Mr. Incredible wrestles with domestic life — the superhero sequel an entire generation grew up waiting for.
07
Mission: Impossible — Fallout
JulyParamount
Tom Cruise keeps raising his own bar: this time a genuine HALO jump, a helicopter chase he flies himself, and consequences from every previous mission coming home to roost. Summer’s most reliable adrenaline supply.
08
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
NovemberWarner Bros.
The wizarding world darkens as Jude Law’s young Dumbledore enlists Newt Scamander against Johnny Depp’s Grindelwald. J.K. Rowling’s five-film saga takes its most ambitious turn yet.
09
Aquaman
DecemberWarner Bros. / DC
Jason Momoa’s half-human king claims the throne of Atlantis in James Wan’s underwater epic. After Wonder Woman proved DC’s solo films could soar, all eyes are on the ocean floor to close out the year.
The year in one glance
February belongs to Wakanda; April–May to Thanos.
Two long-awaited sequels finally arrive: Incredibles 2 and Deadpool 2.
Spielberg, Krasinski and Wan each bring a completely different kind of spectacle.
December’s Atlantis epic decides how the year is remembered.
Jaw-dropping, nerve-wracking, heart-touching — 2018 has all three in reserve. Whatever your genre, keep an evening free almost every month; the movies certainly will.
